Ebène, 9 April 2019: As part of the overall InnovED 2019 project, the National Productivity and Competitiveness Council (NPCC) organized a MasterClass on Innovation in Education from 2 to 5 April 2019. The workshop was held at the NPCC and regrouped some 100 Education Officers who will act as facilitators in the different secondary institutions of the island.
The MasterClass was delivered by IBM through their Digital Nation Africa (D-NA) initiative which aims at enabling African citizens, entrepreneurs, and communities with the knowledge and tools to innovate, design, develop, and launch their own digital solutions. D-NA provides a free, self-paced learning and enablement platform that sparks innovation, and supports the new kinds of careers needed for a 21st century workforce in Africa.
The workshop covered the aspects of Design Thinking which is a user-centered approach that empowers the participants to develop new and innovative solutions to the problem at hand. The participants were also engaged in some Design Thinking activities to practice the framework.
The objective of the MasterClass was to provide higher level training to the facilitators, who will in turn disseminate their learning to the groups of students working on their projects to be presented at the end of InnovED 2019.
While the InnovED project promotes the element of innovation, it is interesting to note that InnovED itself has been undergoing an innovative process year on year, the IBM MasterClass being one of the innovative undertakings amid the whole project.
“InnovED has become a breakthrough and much-awaited initiative in the secondary and vocational education sphere. The MasterClass today is an example of the effort that we are putting into to bring the best for the learning community of Mauritius. While the MasterClass will help the facilitators to better equip the students from the different secondary schools in terms of design thinking tools, it will also be an opportunity for the facilitators to use these tools for their own professional development,” says Mr. Deepak Balgobin, Executive Director of the NPCC.
Besides the MasterClass on Design Thinking, InnovED 2019 this year comes with other innovations such as an Innovation Club at school level and a ‘CREAThon’. Participating students will have the opportunity to further enhance their prototypes developed in the Innovation Clubs into products or services with assistance from experts.
The projects to be submitted by students through their Innovation Clubs will be further improved by experts in a CREAThon. The CREAThon will be a full day event involving a pool of experts to assist each team to further develop the prototypes into product or services.
